I have been cleaning carpets in Washington state since 1989. Our state is more diverse in its population and weather than people may know. Washington is divided into two distinct geographical parts; west of the Cascade Mountains and east of the Cascades mountains.
The east side of the state which tends to take a back seat to the west side, because the population base is much smaller. Eastern Washington is agriculturally based and known for its famous Washington apples, along with beautiful open fields of wheat, potatoes, corn, onions and many other vegetables. One unknown fact is Washington grows more potatoes than Idaho. In the past few years, our production and yield per acre has grown to overcome the mighty Idaho potato.
The east side of Washington has a climate that many people envy. Four distinct seasons with a long spring, summer and fall. Winter usually lasts from December through January with snow staying on the ground and below freezing temperatures. At 700 feet above sea level, our summers are dry and hot with water skiing and beach activities everywhere. We have hundreds of lakes and several mighty rivers, one being the Columbia River, flowing through the state. We get our water from the cascades and it comes from the west side of Washington, the rainy side. The east side is a desert and generally receives less than 10 inches of rain a year.
The west side is the leader in business commerce for the state, with the Puget Sound water way bringing in commerce from the orient and around the world to the US. Microsoft was founded and is head quartered in Redmond, Washington, which has created 100's of millionaires throughout the state. Boeing, the airplane manufacturing giant, employs 1,000s of skilled workers and has created billions of dollars in revenues. The employment opportunities on the west side dwarfs the east side, however the agriculture business is the largest dollar grossing business in the state.
It is important to know your customer base is your target them with your advertising, your direct mail and your networking. What may work in one area is not guaranteed to work in another due to differences. Carpet is more plentiful per home in the east side where it's colder. Hard surfaces are more plentiful on the west side where the weather is wetter and area rugs are used to soften the floors appearance and reduce noise.
